Mr Baker’s Blog on Tour: Day One

So, after six hours of sitting in traffic jams, navigating mile-after-mile of roadworks (having paid a whopping £6.40 for the privilege – thanks M6 Toll!) and driving past the entrance to my hotel not one, but twice, I have finally arrived at my base of operations for the first leg of Mr Baker’s Blog on Tour!

Yup, I am currently writing from the VERY plush and glamourous surroundings of the Travelodge Bury – conveniently close to both Bolton and Manchester.

Totally brought my own pillow from home… #lovinglife

I’ve actually been here for about four hours now, but as soon as I had settled in, I had to have a lil’ nap to help me recover of the trauma of the drive. I’m quite serious napper actually, so I have no idea how I am going to manage to cram in all the fun that I have planned over the next week-and-a-half, alongside my driving and napping commitments. I might end up turning into one of those peculiar types that pull into lay-bys to have naps, midway through long journeys (Hi Dad!).

Once I was feeling slightly more rested, it was time to go out and explore the local area! The Travelodge Bury is one of those convenient roadside stops that is just off of the motorway – naturally that means there isn’t a huge amount around, but I did find one destination – right on my doorstep – that would have been very popular, if the other half had come with me… Next time, eh?

I’m not a huge fan of fast food if I’m honest, but I’m sure I won’t be able to resist the tasty lure of a hash brown or two, come the morning. There is also a decent-looking family pub right next to the hotel as well, but being the healthy and wholesome individual that I am though (*coughs*), I decided to ignore these options, in favour of a quick dash to the local ASDA instead – which is also within convenient walking distance. It really is a most useful location.

You’d be very proud of me though. I managed to resist the temptations of the book aisle, even when I stumbled across the latest GBBO cookery book tie-in. I think that will have to wait until I’m home – I don’t think I can fit anything else in the car!

You OK there, Paul?

Instead, I’m going to take my very exciting sandwich and fruit back to my room, where I will indulge my pre-GBBO excitement by re-watching series five on Netflix. Definitely one of my favourites.

While I’m doing that, perhaps you can indulge me and tell me what you think this is supposed to be? This is the artwork that is hanging over the bed in my huge-but-empty hotel room and I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is supposed to be? My image isn’t blurry by the way. Answers on a postcard? Or I guess you could just stick them in the comments below…

I must apologise to those of you who were expecting day one of Mr Baker’s Blog on Tour to be a riot of fun and excitement – rest assured, I will be back tomorrow with full coverage of the first day of the Bolton Food & Drink Festival, where I will be meeting up with the lovely Rosie Cake-Diva and Kay Gajra of Kaykes, as well as schmoozing up to anyone and everyone who will talk to me, of course. Be sure to hit the subscribe button on the right, before you go, to ensure you don’t miss a single post from Mr Baker’s Blog on Tour. You’ll need to hit confirm in the email I send you too!

EDIT: It has just been brought to my attention that this weekend is Manchester Pride – which would explain why my hotel is full of gentleman who are infinitely better-groomed than I currently am! Bless the hotel receptionist, but I don’t think I am remotely Pride-ready! Maybe next year!
