Some Something Sweet news…

Happy Sunday Cake Chums and welcome back to Mr Baker’s Cakes: The Blog.

I imagine you’re probably here looking for this week’s issue of Something Sweet, the weekly round up of all the latest news from the world of cake.

Unfortunately, life got in the way of things a little bit this week and, as a result, I made the reluctant decision to pull this week’s issue.

Rather than just leave you in the lurch though, I thought I should at least swing by and let you know why the break in our usual routine.

If you have already watched this week’s episode of my Bakealong with GBBO, you will have seen that we celebrated the arrival of a new addition to the Baker family this week. Yes, rather excitingly, my brother and his fiancé gave birth to my beautiful new niece, baby Eleanor Hazel – or Ellie for short – on Sunday.

Naturally, I had to head up to see her as soon as I could and so, on Friday, I loaded up my car with my mum and sister and set off on the two and-a-half hour drive up to Kettering. Unfortunately, it seems that the rest of the world was driving north from the south coast at the same time as us and, with the addition of more than a few road-blocking accidents, the journey actually ended up taking us FIVE AND-A-HALF HOURS (I also somehow managed to trap a nerve in my shoulder during the drive too, so all in all a great time).

You’d think after all that, we would be blessed with an easier journey home, right? Well, I guess it was slightly easier… we only detoured via London!

I eventually got home a little before midnight (having left at 10am in the morning) and, having lost the entire day – which would normally be a writing day – figured that I would spend the following day (Saturday) getting all caught up and writing this week’s issue.

Unfortunately, fate had other plans for me and I woke to find one of my fur babies completely unable to walk on one of his back legs and clearly in great distress.

Rather worryingly, it was the same leg that Buster Cat broke pretty significantly about eight years ago and had to have some fairly substantial surgery on to rebuild it – with all sorts of metal work. As you can probably imagine, we were panicking like mad!

After a worrying few hours and a mad dash to our wonderful vets, it seems that things aren’t looking as serious as we initially thought. They have ruled out complications resulting from his previous injury and it doesn’t appear to be broken again, so I think the lil’ bruiser has had a lucky escape this time. I would love to know what happened to him though?! He has had an injection and spent most of the day sleeping it off, we just need to keep him fairly contained and monitor him for the next few days to check that things seem to be improving as expected on their own.

As a result, you can see that I really would not have had the time to pull together this week’s issue properly, so rather than try to bodge something together, I thought I would let you guys know what has been going on and assure you that we will, of course, be back to normal next week.

Thanks for your patience and support though guys – I know many of you have beloved fur babies too, so will completely understand the scare that Buster gave us this morning.

In the meantime, to get your weekly fix of Mr Baker’s Cakes: The Blog, why not check out this week’s Bakealong with GBBO video which I’ll include below.

Or you can head to my YouTube channel to see it in situ. Don’t forget to subscribe while you are there!

Like I said in last week’s issue, I really think that I am starting to relax into this whole YouTubing thing – and I hope that that is coming across in the videos.

If you are still super keen for some Sunday morning reading material, you can also check out back issues of Something Sweet here or peruse earlier issues of Something Sweet in its old format here.

Ahead of next week, don’t forget to send me your contributions for the next issue of Something Sweet. To find out more about how you can get involved and share the latest cake news from your neck of the woods, you can check out this post.

Thanks again for being so understanding guys and I’ll see you all next week for another issue of Something Sweet, your weekly slice of all the latest news from the world of cake.

  1. Congratulations to your family. Your baby niece is beautiful. You’re weekly magazine is such a great read and I really don’t know how you do it weekly as there must be so much work involved. Sometimes life just gets in the way and we can’t do anything about it, but please don’t worry, meeting your niece is much more important. Can’t wait to read the next issue when it’s ready.

  2. What a beautiful baby. God bless you and your lovely family. Wishing a faster recovery for your fur baby.

  3. Gorgeous pic of your new niece, hope your shoulder is feeling better, and Buster too. Pets are part of the family and it’s just as worrying when they’re ill. We’ve had our canine fur baby since he was 8 weeks old and he has a tummy problem which means a prescription diet. Having said that, it’s my sons tummy that’s been the worry this week, as he had to have an emergency appendectomy! He’s 33 but you never stop worrying. It was quite a good distraction to get in the kitchen and do some baking this weekend! Like you said, life sometimes gets in the way, and we have to prioritise. Family comes first, fur babies included! 😀
