Introducing The Great British Bakealong 2020!

Hey Cake Chums and welcome back to Mr Baker’s Cakes: The Blog!

The Great British Bake Off is BACK and you know what that means… my weekly bakealong challenge is back too!

Long time followers will know that for the last five years (I think…?), I have been baking along with the talented amateur bakers of The Great British Bake Off and 2020 is no different… Introducing The Great British Bakealong 2020 – every week for the next ten weeks, I will be attempting to bake along with the bakers in the tent – and this year, I AM switching things up!

Rather than exclusively baking along with the Technical Challenges like in the last few years, in 2020, YOU will get to decide which challenges I take on!

In this week’s first episode, the vote was overwhelmingly in favour of the Signature Challenge, so, in today’s video, I will be attempting to create my very own original Battenberg Cake recipe.

I’ll warn you, as I’m introducing the challenge – as well as baking two cakes, whipping up a batch of ganache AND making from scratch – this week’s episode is a little longer than the norm, but hopefully they won’t all be quite so feature length… 😉

Check out episode one of The Great British Bakealong below and be sure to let me know what you think of my bake.

If you want to ensure you don’t miss a future episode of The Great British Bakealong, be sure to head over to YouTube and hit that big red subscribe button! And if you decide to have a go at one of this week’s challenges, be sure to tag me on social media so I can come and check out your bakes…

But, until next week guys… happy caking!

Getting to Grips with… Embossing on Cakes!

Happy Sunday, cake chums!

After having them sat on my development shelf, gathering dust for a shameful amount of time now, in this week’s video, ‘Getting to Grips with… Embossing on Cakes!’ I’m finally getting stuck in to all of the cake embossing kits that I have been sent or gifted over the last 12-18 months.

I’m sure that many of you will have been using products likes the Sweet Stamp by AmyCakes, the Sugar Press from Crafty Designs and the PME Fun Fonts on your cakes for a while now, and I know that I have definitely seen some stunning examples of how they can be used to enhance the cakes we create, but are they really as easy to use as they look?

In my newest series, ‘Getting to Grips with…’, I’ll be having a go at a whole host of skills and techniques that can be used to take our cake designs to the next level, and hopefully, helping some of you to have the confidence to give them a go for yourself at the same time.

In this week’s first episode, ‘Getting to Grips with… Embossing on Cakes!’, we’ll be checking out some stunning fonts from Sweet Stamp by AmyCakes, the Sugar Press and PME, applying them to both a cake and a cake board, as well as exploring some of the other fantastic add ons and embellishments available from these brands to really elevate our cakes.

And if you are somebody that HAS been embossing for a while, be sure to get in touch and share your top tips for how to get the very best results from these fabulously innovative tools. Not to mention, your favourite ways to incorporate them into your designs and how you like to fill your embossed text and other elements… Are you a painter, a pourer, a duster, a wiper, a sprinkler, or something else entirely…?

You can watch this week’s video right here on the blog, below – or why not head directly to YouTube, where you will find links to all of the products featured – as well as being able to check out my other videos and hit that subscribe button while you’re there… 😉

I do hope you enjoy my latest video, ‘Getting to Grips with… Embossing on Cakes!’ and remember to pop back at the same time next week for part two…

Until then, Happy Caking!

Episode 6 of Mr Baker’s Cake School is LIVE!

Hey Cake Chums and welcome back to episode 6 of Mr Baker’s Cake School.

As you may have seen, every Friday, while the schools are closed, I am sharing a brand new, child-friendly baking lesson (with the occasional bit of maths and more squeezed in too) to help support you and your families with your home learning.

However, please don’t think they are only suitable for children – plenty of adults have been joining in and sharing their baking results too.

This week, as I’m still at Mummy Baker’s house, I thought we would have a go at a recipe in her honour, so this week, we’re making… WELSH CAKES!

Now, I don’t actually have my own recipe for Welsh Cakes because (rather shamefully), I don’t actually make them all that often. So instead, I reached out to one of my favourite bakers from The Great British Bake Off 2019, who was more than happy to help out.

In fact, look out for a little cameo from her in the video… 😉

To find out who I mean, and to learn how to make a batch of delicious Welsh Cakes, you can either watch the video right here on the blog, or why not head over to YouTube where you can catch up on any episodes you may have missed and hit that all-important subscribe button?

And, as always, if you and/or your family bake along with episode 6 of Mr Baker’s Cake School, then remember to share the results of your baking adventures with me over on social media – I love seeing what you are all baking at home and, you never know, your photos might just make it into next week’s video!

You can find me on Facebook hereInstagram here and on Twitter here.

Oh, and please do share feel free to share the video with any individuals or groups that you think would find it useful.

Until next time… happy caking!
